What We Do at Comprehensive Breast Care

At Comprehensive Breast Care, we provide diagnosis, surgery, and long-term follow-up care for breast cancer and other breast diseases. People generally come to us for care when:

  • There is reason to believe they are at high risk of breast disease, due to either family history, genetic testing, or breast conditions which may make it difficult for mammograms to screen them properly.
  • They have experienced an abnormal mammogram and need follow-up diagnostic attention and other care.
  • They require lymphedema education, screening, and treatment.
  • They seek long-term monitoring following cancer treatment to watch for recurrences.

At the Clinic

At the Comprehensive Breast Care clinic, Dr. Juliann Reiland-Smith offers education, diagnostic services, and treatment for breast health issues.

Some women are at high risk for developing breast cancer either because of a family history, genetic defect or difficult to evaluate breasts. For these individuals, Dr. Reiland-Smith offers special proactive ongoing evaluation and surveillance.

Others may contact Dr. Reiland-Smith after experiencing an abnormal mammogram result or discovering a suspicious lump in a self-exam. For these individuals, Dr. Reiland-Smith performs further diagnostic tests, which may include physical exams, ultrasound evaluations, and ultrasound-guided biopsies using her own in-clinic equipment. When appropriate, she also reviews test results from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and breast-specific gamma imaging (BSGI). Using these tools, she works with her patients to determine the next steps in the diagnosis or treatment of a breast lump or breast cancer.

Ultrasound Evaluation

In the Operating Room

Dr. Reiland-Smith uses ultrasound to assist in precisely locating the lump or tumor to be removed. This sometimes eliminates the need to have a needle placed before surgery.

If a woman chooses to have breast conserving surgery (lumpectomy), Dr. Reiland-Smith uses a new technique called oncloplastic surgery to cosmetically repair the site from which the lump was removed. This provides a better look to the breast after surgery.

Another treatment option that Dr. Reiland-Smith works with is known as "mammosite". Mammosite involves placing a balloon in the breast at the spot from which a breast tumor was removed.  Following the surgery, radiation beads are placed within the balloon for a week.  This delivers the same amount of radiation to the area as a 6 week course of old-fashioned radiation, enabling the patient to receive the benefits of radiation treatment without the disruptions to her schedule.

Following the surgery, Dr. Reiland-Smith checks on the patient during rounds She monitors the recovery process, answers questions, and works with the patient to determine when she is ready to go home.
